1. ChatGPT β Best Overall Chatbot

What we tested
Twelve weeks across 200+ tasks: marketing copy, Python debugging, research briefs, image understanding, voice conversations, and PDF summarization. We compared GPT-4o, o1 reasoning, and the newer o3 model.
What we liked
ChatGPT is still the most complete product on the market. It's fastest, has the deepest feature set (Custom GPTs, Projects, Canvas, voice mode, vision, code interpreter), and the best mobile apps. The new o3 model handles complex reasoning better than any competitor we tested. Multimodal β voice, image, and text β feels seamless. API pricing is competitive and documentation is excellent.
What we didn't like
The $20 Plus tier throttles o3 and Deep Research requests. Context window (128K) is smaller than Claude's 200K. Free tier users get GPT-4o mini, which is noticeably weaker. Custom GPTs quality varies wildly.

What we liked
Claude produces the cleanest prose of any chatbot. Its 200K context window handles books, long legal documents, and full codebases without chunking. Claude Code (the CLI) has become our go-to for agentic coding tasks. The new Sonnet 4.6 model hits a sweet spot between speed and quality.

What we didn't like

What we liked
Gemini is integrated everywhere Google is: Docs, Gmail, Sheets, Slides, and Android. Its 1M-token context window is genuinely useful for research. Multimodal handling of images, video, and audio is strong. Free tier is generous.
What we didn't like
Writing tone is drier than Claude's or ChatGPT's. Reasoning still trails o3 on complex multi-step problems. Quality can feel inconsistent across sessions.
Verdict: If you live in Google Workspace, this is your chatbot.
4. Perplexity β Best for Research with Citations

What we liked
Perplexity inverts the chatbot model: it searches the web first, then summarizes with citations. For research, it's genuinely better than Google + ChatGPT combined. Pro mode uses GPT-4o, Claude, and Sonar under the hood. Focus modes (Academic, Reddit, YouTube) are brilliant.
What we didn't like
Weaker at creative writing and coding. Longer responses sometimes lose the thread. Not designed for open-ended brainstorming.
Verdict: The research specialist. Replace Google for info queries, not ChatGPT for everything else.
5. Microsoft Copilot β Best for Microsoft 365

What we didn't like
Copilot-in-apps costs $30/user/mo on top of existing M365 licenses. Free consumer Copilot is less capable than ChatGPT Plus. UX varies between apps.
Verdict: A no-brainer for M365 teams, less compelling for individuals.
6. DeepSeek β Best Free Chatbot

What we liked

What we didn't like
Chinese provenance raises data-sensitivity concerns for some enterprises. UI is basic. No voice, no image generation, no multimodal. Throughput slows under load.
Verdict: The best free chatbot in 2026. Period.
7. Sider AI β Best Browser Sidebar Assistant
